3 tips to overcome resistance

Every writer faces resistance.

Here are my three personal favorite ways to overcome it.

1. Make writing more pleasurable.

I light my favorite candle, make a cup of coffee in my hand-thrown Cup of Brave mug, wrap myself in a cozy blanket. I also pull an oracle card before I begin.

If I really need an extra boost, I add a square or two of dark chocolate to the mix.

2. Read for inspiration.

The last thing I do before I start writing is read from a book on writing that inspires me.

Some of my favorite titles are:

Steal Like an Artist, by Austin Kleon

The Right to Write, by Julia Cameron

The War of Art, by Stephen Pressfield

I limit my reading to five minutes and always find inspiration.

3. Choose a bare minimum and start with that.

When I’ve been having trouble writing, I go back to my bare minimum: fifteen minutes a day.

Or whatever feels smaller-than-doable to me at the time.

Last year I wrote an entire novel in 30 minutes a day, 4 days a week.

Little bits of time add up.

You don’t need an hour (or three hours) a day to write a book.

These strategies work for me… but they might not work for you. Ready to overcome your resistance?

If you’ve ever thought,

Well maybe I’m just not meant to be a writer. Don’t real writers show up easily?

Or, during a slot of scheduled writing time, Oh, the kids need XYZ… I should focus on some paid work… I really need to do a deep-clean of the kitchen cabinets…

You’re not alone.

Ready for strategies that WILL work for you?

The Overcome Writer’s Resistance Bootcamp, hosted by my friend Monica Hay, is designed to help you break through the blocks that have held you back from writing your book
.

You’re going to learn the source of resistance (and it’s not what you think), and get practical strategies based on brain science.

Monica has walked the path of resistance. For years, she found it hard to face the page. She compared herself to her friends who had no trouble showing up.

Now, she’s taking what she’s learned about the brain & helping writers like you remove the shame surrounding resistance and helping you write again.

She’s bringing together live training, Q&A sessions, and community support to make sure you can FINALLY write again.
