leap after leap in the darkness
By definition, creating art is a process that requires us to grapple with uncertainty.
If we knew going into a project exactly what was going to come out the other end, there wouldn’t be room for creative expression. There wouldn’t be space to create something new.
Agnes de Mille, the great choreographer, once said, “The artist never entirely knows. We guess. We may be wrong, but we take leap after leap in the darkness.”
Sitting down to a blank page is scary.
Your brain has so many questions. What’s going to happen? Is this writing even good? Who do I think I am to be writing at all? What if no one likes this? What if this is just a waste of time?
And when we sit with that uncertainty instead of distracting ourselves from it - that’s where the magic happens.
And when we sit with the uncertainty, we begin to see how uncertain everything is, all the time. We begin to get familiar with uncertainty.
It’s good practice for being human.
Because uncertainty is everywhere right now.
And what our world most needs right now is a return to humanity.
Let’s be the change we wish to see.
