✨Why intuitive writers are different

I’m working on a top-secret, super-special project for you…which you’ll hear about for the first time next Friday. Stay tuned. ;)

As part of this project, I recently had an amazing conversation with the writing coach Lauren Sapala about intuitive writers.

She spoke to something I’ve known about myself for a long time, and that I teach, and that was super affirming to hear from a colleague in the field:

Intuitive writers cannot plan the way other writers do.

The outside-in plans to plot out your novel, memoir, or personal development book do not work for us.

Intuitive writers can’t, for example, write character profiles for characters we hardly know. We can’t plot out the major beats of the novel. We can’t plan out what trajectory our memoir or personal development book will follow.

We can only listen to the book and write what it wants to speak through us.

And when we have done that for a long time, then we can go back and follow the threads that have emerged and shape and structure our book.

This made me feel so SEEN.

You’ll be able to watch our whole conversation soon. Stay tuned. ;)

P.S. I had ANOTHER amazing conversation with a fellow author and writing coach, Jen Milius, about the role of fear in creativity. I shared about how fear plays out in my own writing process. You can listen to our conversation on the TufFish podcast, or watch it on YouTube.
